The mission of Grandfather Academy is to provide special educational opportunities for students who have been estranged by emotional, sexual or other abuse.
Grandfather Academy is a North Carolina public charter school on the Hayes Campus in Banner Elk. The school was established in the early 1990s to meet the educational needs of children in the residential program.
The teachers are certified by the state of North Carolina. In addition, the treatment staff associated with the residential treatment program work continuously in each classroom to ensure continuity in treatment programming and to assist school staff in maintaining a focus on educational activities. Many of the children attending Grandfather Academy qualify for Exceptional Children programs and have Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs). Children who do not need these services have Individualized Educational Goal (IEGs) plans to ensure that their individual educational needs are met. In both cases, there is considerable effort expended to ensure that the development and implementation of IEPs and IEGs as well as Service Plans are coordinated. The majority of our students make excellent academic progress.
In 2009, the Academy expanded its educational programs to reach out to other off-campus students who had similar education needs to the children in our residential program, yet did not need to reside at Grandfather Home. Thus, our Day Treatment program began.
