Please join us for the Circle of Courage presentation at Grandfather Academy as we celebrate our children's progress in their treatment.
Circle of Courage starts off with lunch and a tour of our Hayes Campus in Banner Elk. After the tour, we all go to Grandfather Academy for a presentation of the children's school projects and a special awards presentation called "Circle of Courage."
The Circle of Courage tour is for anyone who would like to learn more about the children and families Grandfather Home serves. The program was created to give the children an outside audience to show their hard work off to and to educate the public on the struggles these children are working to overcome every day. The program starts at 12pm and usually ends around 1:30pm.
The Circle of Courage is a model of positive youth development that blends old and new. It integrates Native Americal practices of parenting with cutting edge contemporary child resilience research The Circle of Courage is based on the idea that there are four universal needs for positive child development: belonging, mastery, independence and generosity.
At Grandfather Academy, students read through a library of works selected to highlight each of the four universal needs. Then in a very special program once every month, the students present works of art, poems, songs and even dances that they have created to show what belonging, mastery, independence and generosity mean to them. As they exhibit competency in the four areas, they are given feathers and beads to put on their Circle of Courage, which is on display in the school's hallway.
Lunch starts at noon in the Joseph F. Cannon Administration Building. The program is free, but we need to order the correct number of lunches, so please RSVP. Contact April Miller by phone at 828-898-5465 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org by Wednesday the week of the program and let us know you're coming.
